Begin a Period Equity Campaign
Period is a national and international movement, which has culminated in legislation here in California, but you don’t need legal mandates to make changes at your school!
Girls/mestruators are missing out on educational time, and needlessly staying home from school due to a lack of access to period care products. This was another campaign led by a committee inside of our Feminist Student Union!
We formed a, “Period Equity Task Force” at our site, consisting of parents, students, teachers, school nurses, custodians, and our principal. We needed parents to help us understand the unique culturally specific barriers to period health which our community was dealing with, before we could begin addressing the stigma and shame at our site.
After surveying our student body, we learned that some boys/non-mestruators were sexually harassing students on our campus about their periods, which left many girls/menstruators too embarassed to ask for help.
After putting videos and slides content out to the student community, we are proud to report that we have successfully dealt with much of this stigma and shame, and have greatly reduced sexual harassment about periods for our student body!
I joined the California Menstrual Equity Coalition (CAMECO), and have been able to implement this law with the help of our FSU at our site thanks largely to the Implementation guide CAMECO produced, with the help of various organizations across our state!
