Start a Feminist Club/Student Union
A Feminist Student Union will be the primary vehicle for outreach and advocacy as you begin to shift your campus culture, and it requires a strong adult presence to support the cause, keep it going, and keep everyone safe. If implemented correctly, the presence of this group on your campus will slowly get the community used to the idea of gender equity based reforms. Begin simply—hold space to play games, and have fun!
To begin with, choose a national/international framework which has a good gender based violence message/curriculum. I am using Girl Up, which is part of the United Nations, and has several foci for your club/union to focus on during meetings. SASH (Students Against Sexual Harassment) is also a stellar resource, which teaches young people about the various forms of sexual harm, and instructs them on how to advocate for themselves as well.
While it is essential to have student leadership, it is equally important that the adult advisor helps and leads this work. It is not the responsibility of children to create safe places. This work is draining, and puts students in harm's way due to the backlash from the community. Adults must work together with parents, students, and other staff to mitigate harm, and ensure that students and parents are providing informed consent for all advocacy efforts.
